Race Report

Gargrave show has a bit of everything and the wet conditions added to them making parts of the course winding its way up to Sharphaw summit very messy but adds to the fun. The senior race goes out of the showfield and crosses the road, where you have to leap over some bales of straw before a river crossing. From here you cross some ploughed fields and work your way up to the woods. Once inside you run up what I can only describe as a tunnel of trees, coming out into the light where the climb gets steeper going up to the summit. Coming back via the same route it's fast and furious with a rapturous applause when you finish in the showfield. Not a race to be missed.

The senior race saw 58 starters on the line and Ted Mason added another win to his recent return to form, with a comfortable gap on 2nd place Lee Athersmith. First over 40 Mark Horrocks pulled off a 3rd place with super vet (over 50) Steve Oldfield in 4th. Marcus Rae, Mike Fanning and Andrew Grenfell finished in the next 3 places. First lady was Anna Kelly who put a fairly wide gap between her and second lady Kate Rogan who ran well to hold off Tamara Hird in third with Judy Howells closely following. All runners took something away... MUD!

The under 17 race once again went to James Mountain with Tom Sessford in hot pursuit after overtaking a couple of places including 3rd place Jack Thompson in the showfield. Luke Maude, Johnny Bradshaw and Matt Fretwell took 4th, 5th and 6th. Emma Flanagan had a comfortable win in the girls, with Amy Fretwell and Emma Thompson 2nd and 3rd placings, followed by Lois Grinstead in 4th.

Two seconds parted the first two in the under 14's with Sam Till getting the result over Marc Scott. Will Marshall and Dale Sutton had a close battle for 3rd and 4th, followed by Elliot Wylie and Jacob Uren. The girls race saw Emma Spencer take another fine win, ahead of Katie Lehovsky, Rebecca Swindells, Melanie Morphet and Faith Biddle in a very competitive race.

The under 12's saw 27 runners compete and James Hall grabbed a nice win from Ben Johnstone and Ben Till in second and third. The next seven runners were only separated by 17 seconds with the rest in hot pursuit. In the girls Lorna Jo Nunwick carried on her winning form with Nicole Narey, Rebecca Flanagan and Chelsey Holder in second third and fourth places.

The under 9's attracted sixteen runners with Oliver Spencer carrying on his winning form, but next place was snatched from Ellamae Gibson by a fast finishing Lily Mcguiness who grabbed second place overall and first girl. Fourth spot went to local runner Fred Hewitson.

John and Caroline Thompson did a great job of organizing the event, including making the route easy to follow. With the added help from Pauline, Samantha and Grace with entries and times and Roger Ingham on the mike, the day was a big success. Also a big thank you and well done to all who competed.
